TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The northeast Kansas town of Harveyville is firming up plans to rebuild after its historic church building was destroyed in a killer tornado.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that a building committee for the Wabaunsee County town’s United Methodist Church met this past week to talk about the project.
Plans call for a one-story structure to be built on the same land where the former building stood for more than 100 years. It was leveled nearly five months ago in an EF2 tornado packing winds of 120 to 130 mph. One person was killed in the tornado, and about a dozen others were injured.
The Rev. Dennis Irwin calls the reconstruction “very exciting.” One goal is to have a dedicated space in the new building for a food pantry.
