Friday’s crash of the state’s new motor vehicle system is making it hard for employees in the Riley County Treasurer’s office and those in other motor vehicle offices across the state.
The system installed by 3M Motor Vehicle Systems is used in other states including Iowa, Montana, and soon in Connecticut, but Kansas is the first state to report major issues.
“Our system made us unable to print (on Friday),” Riley County Treasurer Eileen King says. “Well if we can’t print a decal to put on someone’s tag then we can’t do business.”
The malfunctioning of the system has caused the state to withhold from making a payment of $4 million to the company based in Minnesota.
As a result of the frustration of many across the state, two new laws put into effect on Sunday have changed 30 day permits for newly purchased vehicles to 60 day permits and V.I.N. Inspection fees will increase to $20 along with Salvage Inspections increasing to $25.
Along with the new statutes, a new grace period for those with 30 day permits has been put into effect in Riley County due to the malfunctioning of the system. Those who were unable to renew their permits by the June 30th deadline, have 13 days to do so from that date.
