KMAN received a statement from Manhattan High School Principal, Greg Hoyt regarding a student suicide that occurred Monday evening:

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am deeply saddened to report that Alexander Bascom, MHS senior class member, died last evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family in this dark time.

It is important to recognize that death affects individuals very differently, and we should expect a wide variety of emotions and responses to this news. The most important thing we can do is to be supportive and encourage open expressions of feelings. At school, we have implemented a plan for responding to this tragic event focused on helping students and their families get back to regular learning and every day activities as soon as possible. We will have members of our counseling department available for students and staff members all day, and we will attempt to maintain as normal a routine and structure as possible. We encourage each of you to do the same. If you feel that your child or family needs some assistance, please contact us, and we will do everything we can to help you.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school at 587-2100. We know that you will join us in our concern and sympathy for the family.

    Greg Hoyt, MHS Principal
