The mascot of Manhattan High has been the Indians for over 75 years now, and since its’ inception has been no stranger to controversy. A local group in Manhattan held their inaugural meeting last week in hopes to do away with the mascot that many people may find offensive.
Duke Prentup, the son of former coach Frank Prentup, got in touch with KMAN to share his thoughts and opinions on the mascot which was intended to honor his father. Prentrup was a beloved coach at Manhattan High who was referred to as “Chief” due to his heritage in the Tuscarora tribe. Prentrup was memorialized for his impact on the spirit of the school and was eventually inducted into the University of Colorado Hall of Fame for his time at the university as a football and baseball coach.
