Manhattan murder suspect makes first court appearance; second victim identified in criminal complaint

By Brandon Peoples on November 4, 2019 Local News, Manhattan

A Manhattan man charged with first-degree murder made his initial appearance Monday in Riley County District Court.

Judge Kendra Lewison read the formal charges against 29-year-old Richard Goens, including first-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery, in the Nov. 1 shooting death of 24-year-old Tanner Zamecnik of Manhattan. Goens has not entered a plea.

A criminal complaint filed with the court Monday alleges Goens fired the fatal shot in an attempt to rob Zamecnik. The complaint states Goens approached Zamecnik’s vehicle in the 1400 block of Cambridge Place with a handgun with intent to steal cash and marijuana but was prevented from doing so during an apparent struggle.

The complaint also states that a second victim, identified as Courtney Yowell, sustained a fractured ankle. Goens faces a charge of aggravated battery and aggravated assault against her.

Goens will make his next appearance Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. in front of Judge James Kepple.
