The Kansas Turnpike Authority is warning those across the state of a potential smishing scam, which is defined as a “social engineering attack” that uses fake mobile text messages to trick people into downloading malware or share sensitive information with cyber criminals.
Over the weekend, several people received text messages from numbers posing as the KTA saying that they were late funds that needed to be paid. According to a social media post from the KTA, the texts were intended to steal other’s personal information.
In the text messages, the number tells the person to go to invoicedriveks.com to pay but that is a fraudulent website as the KTA’s website is DriveKS.com. The agency asks anyone who receives these suspicious texts to contact the FBI.
