Announced on the team’s Twitter account, Manhattan High boys soccer coach Frank Alonso passed away on Sunday morning. He had been battling stage IV pancreatic cancer. Alonso was 52.

Deemed inoperable by doctors, Coach Alonso was diagnosed with this disease on October 15. Once the community heard about the news, a GoFundMe page created to support Alonso’s fight and it raised $45,344 as of Monday morning. Recently, the MHS soccer team held a fundraiser that brought in over $6,000 in a few hours.

His Indians defeated Shawnee Mission East in penalty kicks in the semis, but lost, 3-0, to Olathe East in the championship game.

Alonso was in his 13th as the program’s head coach and 19th overall.
