We continue our KMAN News Series “From the Principal’s Office” today highlighting the preschools in Manhattan/Ogden Schools. For this edition, we speak with Elisabeth Nelson at College Hill Preschool. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are not the only ones starting school soon. The community’s youngest learners will be starting their first day of preschool August 20 in the district’s two early childhood education centers. One of those buildings — College Hill is under construction, meaning a temporary space had to be secured. Don’t expect the construction zones across Manhattan to ease up much before the end of the month. On KMAN’s In Focus this week, Manhattan City Manager Ron Fehr updated the progress made so far by Public Works crews on a variety of projects. Weather has delayed some of that progress on multiple projects. Today we visit Manhattan High School as we continue our KMAN news series “From the Principal’s Office.” Manhattan High School students will see a new, but familiar face in the principal’s office for the new school year. MHS Principal Michael Dorst is starting his first year as the school’s principal next week. Dorst had been serving as the assistant principal at MHS for the past six years, and overall has spent 12 years with the district.  He has a combined total of 22 years in education. RILEY, Kan. — A Clay County man was killed following a crash Thursday evening along Hwy 77 near Riley. The Kansas Highway Patrol and Riley County Police Department in addition to Riley County EMS responded to the collision just after 5:30 p.m. on Hwy 77, also known as Madison Road. CLAY CENTER, Kan. — Emergency officials in Clay County investigated a bomb threat Thursday morning at a Wendy’s restaurant in Clay Center. According to Clay Center Police Chief Bill Robinson, authorities were alerted to a possible bomb threat around 6:23 a.m. Police called Kansas Highway Patrol who sent their canine unit to investigate and cleared the scene just after 9:30 a.m. Robinson says a sweep of the premises for potential explosive devices found nothing inside the building. JUNCTION CITY, Kan. — The Junction City-Geary County Drug Operations Group got a little more than they bargained for when they served a search warrant Wednesday at Junction City home. Officers were called out to an apartment at 311 West 8th Street as part of an investigation into drug distribution and person crimes. In addition to uncovering heroin, crack cocaine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and two guns, a small alligator was also wrangled and removed from the home. The Flint Hills Breadbasket is in dire need of restocking its shelves. Breadbasket Director Maribeth Kieffer says the need changes at different times of the year which causes inventory to dwindle. “We have just come out of the summer months when children aren’t in school and they’re not getting the hot lunches.  We have been really busy and have seen an unusually high number of people this summer and so our inventory has taken a hit,” Kieffer said.
