The US Small Business Administration will offer low-interest federal disaster loans to businesses and residents affected by the Labor Day flooding after declaring a disaster in the state. The S.B.A. made the declaration in response to a request they received from Governor Jeff Colyer. Their loans are available to businesses as well as homeowners and renters whose property was damaged in the flooding. The loans are available in Riley, Pottawatomie, Clay, Geary, Wabaunsee, Washington and Marshall Counties. Riley County Police Department Director Brad Schoen was injured in a vehicle-bicycle collision while riding his bicycle south of Manhattan Tuesday afternoon. Schoen, avid bicyclist, and the car collided in the 2700 block of Moehlman Road just before 1 p.m. A minivan driven by Rafael Cuevas Huerta pulled out of a private driveway and did not yield right-of-way — resulting in the collision. Schoen was transported to Via Christi Hospital for treatment and his injuries are not considered life-threatening according to a source within the RCPD. A 1st Infantry Division soldier died Sunday from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on Fort Riley. Pfc. Timothy Meuse lost control of his motorcycle late Saturday night on the post. He was transported to Irwin Army Community Hospital and died the next day. The accident is still under investigation by Fort Riley law enforcement. TOPEKA — The chances of a Kansas voter’s ballot being counted might depend on which county he or she lives in especially if the vote comes in by mail. KANSAS CITY — A nationwide shortage of truckers has some industry officials and national lawmakers supporting a plan to allow 18-year-olds to become long-haul drivers. But some industry officials, like Jeffrey Steinberg, director of the APEX CDL Institute in Kansas City, Kansas, thinks that’s a bad idea, even though the institute trains truckers and would likely see an increase in enrollment. WICHITA — Authorities say a Kansas sheriff’s deputy and a suspect were killed during a fight that broke out as the suspect was being arrested. The Wichita Eagle reports that Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter says Deputy Robert Kunze was shot Sunday about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of downtown Wichita after responding to a call about a suspicious person. Easter says Kunze patted down the suspect’s waistband and found a 40-caliber handgun. Kunze was handcuffing the suspect when the fight began. ATCHINSON — Atchison County authorities say a Missouri teenager has died and another teenager from Texas is in critical condition after a car they were in went into a creek in northeast Kansas during the weekend. Three other teens were able to escape without serious injury. Undersheriff Toby Smith said 16-year-old Zachary Armontrout, of Rushville, Missouri, died Monday at a Kansas City hospital. Sixteen-year-old Regan Moger, of Houston, Texas, remains in critical condition.
