Detectives with the Riley County Police Department Special Investigations Unit made two arrests related to the distribution of illegal prescription drugs on June 3rd at approximately 7:40 PM. These arrests occurred in the 1300 block of Laramie Street in Manhattan. Seized during this investigation were approximately 1,000 Xanax pills, marijuana and other items of drug paraphernalia. A Kansas man pleaded guilty Monday to six counts of exporting and attempting to export firearms illegally from the United States to individuals located in other countries, announced Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and Acting U.S. Attorney Tom Beall of the District of Kansas. Michael Andrew Ryan, 35, of Manhattan, Kansas, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Daniel D. Lucas Paar, 22, of Manhattan was arrested for failing to appear in Riley County District court. Paar was arrested while in the 2000 block of Fort Riley Lane on June 4th, 2016 at approximately 2:55 PM. The original offense is listed as violation of a protection order. Total bond was listed as $8,000.00 and Paar remained confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report. A Manhattan teen was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a fatal accident in southeast Kansas that took four lives Saturday afternoon. Elaine Snowden, 17, of Manhattan was taken to Wesley Medical Center following the accident on Highway 400, three miles west of Severy. Snowden was in a 2013 Lincoln driven by Arden White, 72, of Oklahoma City, who died in the crash. Another passenger Sheryl White, 68, also of Oklahoma City,  died.  A Third passenger, Julia Smith, 18, of Moore Oklahoma survived the crash but was taken to Wesley Medical Center. Sunday was the 28th Annual Garden Tour in Manhattan. Six gardens were featured in the tour. The garden tour is part of Kansas State University Research and Extension Master Gardener Program. The Master Gardener Program helps gardeners learn more about growing and caring for plants. In exchange for intensive training, volunteers help the Extension Service provide information to the public. BURLINGTON — Authorities say a 53-year-old man has died in a boating accident on the Neosho River. The Coffey County Sheriff’s Office said 53-year-old Michael Myers of Burlington was in a small boat on the river Friday evening when the boat capsized. An officer from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks found Myers’ body early Saturday. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that another man survived the accident.

The Kansas Court of Appeals released its opinions on two area cases–and in both cases affirmed the lower courts’ rulings. In the State of Kansas v. Rey Manuel Acosta-Felton,  Acosta-Felton had appealed the Riley County district court’s denial of his presentence motion to withdraw his no contest plea to one count of battery of a correctional officer. The Court of Appeals found District Court Judge Meryl Wilson  did not abuse his discretion, and the denial is affirmed. TOPEKA — A spokeswoman for Gov. Sam Brownback says his staff is looking at shuffling funds within state government to cover a projected short-term budget deficit. But Brownback spokeswoman Eileen Hawley said Friday that budget-balancing measures won’t be finalized until officials have a better picture of revenues this month. Tax collections fell $74.5 million short of expectations in May. That leaves Kansas with a projected deficit of about $45 million when the fiscal year ends June 30. Hawley said the governor does not anticipate trimming spending to address the problem. But making cuts so late in a fiscal year is difficult anyway.…
