BAXTER SPRINGS — Gov. Sam Brownback is seeking federal help for an area that flooded last month in southeast Kansas. Brownback’s office said in a news release Thursday that the governor signed a disaster declaration request that was submitted to the Small Business Administration. The request seeks helps for residents affected by last month’s flooding in Cherokee County. The flooding forced hundreds from their homes and closed several roads. The Small Business Administration provides low-interest disaster loans to businesses of all sizes, private non-profit organizations, homeowners and renters.

TOPEKA — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback has issued a new, broader executive order telling state agencies that they can’t assist with resettling refugees who are security risks. The order issued by the governor Friday applies to any refugees presenting a security risk to the state. Brownback’s office issued a statement saying the order recognizes the threat posed by terrorists or refugees sympathetic to them. The Republican governor issued an executive order in November that applied specifically to Syrian refugees. Like the previous order, the new one also is aimed at preventing organizations that receive state grant money from helping relocate refugees. The…

Manhattan High continues to impress early in the season as they roll on Friday night to a pair of wins over Topeka High to remain undefeated. The MHS girls (7-0, 3-0) cruise past the Lady Trojans (3-3, 1-2) 57-38 behind 15 points from Gigi McAtee. Madison Mittie finished with 13 points and Garrin Williams finished with nine. Pottowatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat has filed for re-election. Riat, who’s been the sheriff there since 2001, told KMAN the biggest reason he filed is because of his love for his job. “I truly enjoy my job over here,” he said. “I’ve had the privilege of serving the citizens here for quite a long time.” Riat, who grew up in the Wamego area, said he knows the region. “I think a lot of people know I’m a life-long resident,” he said. “My family farms north of Belvue and went to school in Wamego and graduated in 1982 and I started…

It’s been an eventful week for Pottawatomie County law enforcement and court officials–and KMAN has several updates on arrests and court appearances. Two people arrested in connection with aggravated burglary in Wamego Wednesday remain in jail and will come before the court Tuesday if they cannot bond out. Bond for Brian Duzan was set at $25,000 on charges of aggravated burglary, possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor theft and misdemeanor attempted theft . Another person apprehended in connection with the case, Michelle Larue, has a bond of $10,000. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) A longtime Kansas City, Kansas, lawyer has been found guilty of misappropriating funds from a disabled man’s trust fund. A Wyandotte County judge this week found Don Charles Bell guilty of felony mistreatment of a dependent adult and misdemeanor passing a worthless check. The Kansas City Star reports Ball’s license has been suspended by the Kansas Supreme Court. Prosecutors say Ball managed the affairs of a man who has a disabling brain injury. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A Lawrence High School graduate has created a nonprofit to funnel donations to Kansas schools while the state Legislature overhauls the school funding system. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that 2010 graduate Thomas Wheatley has named the charity OurKansas. Donors can pick from four plans, ranging from $4.49 to $12.69 per month. Fifty percent of donations go toward a local school program or activity of the donor’s choice, 30 percent go toward low-income districts and 20 percent go toward community outreach. In March, the Kansas Legislature repealed the school funding formula that had been in place since 1992.…
