TOPEKA — Kansas is reporting that it collected nearly $8 million more in taxes than anticipated in November, with both income and sales taxes exceeding expectations. The state Department of Revenue said Tuesday the state collected $430 million in taxes last month instead of the $422 million projected in a new fiscal forecast issued earlier in the month. The surplus is about 1.9 percent. Since the current fiscal year began in July, the state has collected $2.24 billion in tax revenues. A Manhattan man has waived a preliminary hearing in an aggravated battery case in Pottawatomie County. Russell Mayes had been set for the hearing Tuesday. He’s now set for a January 22nd arraignment. Mayse was arrested in August following an early Sunday morning incident at State Lake Two in rural Manhattan. A female victim was injured when she was reportedly struck by a vehicle. Mayse also faces a DUI charge.

A Riley man facing a second-degree murder charge for the death of his 6-year-old daughter was scheduled for status and preliminary hearings Tuesday afternoon in the Riley County District Courthouse. Joshua Michael Mall, 39, was allegedly driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.13 when he collided with another vehicle and then struck a tree on the evening of Oct. 5 near the 2400 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd. in Manhattan. A report of a burglary to a vehicle was filed in the 1700 Block of South Manhattan on Monday at approximately 12:31 p.m.  Crossland Construction of Columbus Kansas reported that an unknown suspect had entered a semi-trailer and removed several miscellaneous tools and portable heaters valued at approximately $1,350.  No arrests have been made at the time of this report and the incident continues to be under investigation. WICHITA — Doctors have concluded a 17-month-old girl died of severe child abuse after being left in the care of her mother’s boyfriend. A police document released Monday says hospital staff found bruises and bite marks on the girl’s body, swelling and bleeding of her brain, a fractured leg and a cut in one of her internal organs that came from a direct blow to her abdomen.
