Sunday was the 28th Annual Garden Tour in Manhattan. Six gardens were featured in the tour. The garden tour is part of Kansas State University Research and Extension Master Gardener Program. The Master Gardener Program helps gardeners learn more about growing and caring for plants. In exchange for intensive training, volunteers help the Extension Service provide information to the public. Master Gardeners work on community demonstration projects and youth programs, plan and execute the annual Manhattan Garden Tour, assist with Extension garden clinics, exhibitions, and other educational events, and participate in a growing group that holds bimonthly education meetings in…

In celebration of the 99th birthday of the “Big Red One” and the 241 st birthday of the Army, the 1st Infantry Division will host its annual Victory Week starting Monday. The public is invited to witness events of camaraderie and remembrance throughout the week. Victory Week officially begins with the Victory Run around Fort Riley’s Custer Hill at 6:30 a.m. Monday morning. BURLINGTON — Authorities say a 53-year-old man has died in a boating accident on the Neosho River. The Coffey County Sheriff’s Office said 53-year-old Michael Myers of Burlington was in a small boat on the river Friday evening when the boat capsized. An officer from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks found Myers’ body early Saturday. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that another man survived the accident.

The Kansas Court of Appeals released its opinions on two area cases–and in both cases affirmed the lower courts’ rulings. In the State of Kansas v. Rey Manuel Acosta-Felton,  Acosta-Felton had appealed the Riley County district court’s denial of his presentence motion to withdraw his no contest plea to one count of battery of a correctional officer. The Court of Appeals found District Court Judge Meryl Wilson  did not abuse his discretion, and the denial is affirmed. The higher court indicated the appeal represents the third time this particular case has been on their docket to consider the same basic issue. The 17-page document ends…

TOPEKA — A spokeswoman for Gov. Sam Brownback says his staff is looking at shuffling funds within state government to cover a projected short-term budget deficit. But Brownback spokeswoman Eileen Hawley said Friday that budget-balancing measures won’t be finalized until officials have a better picture of revenues this month. Tax collections fell $74.5 million short of expectations in May. That leaves Kansas with a projected deficit of about $45 million when the fiscal year ends June 30. Hawley said the governor does not anticipate trimming spending to address the problem. But making cuts so late in a fiscal year is difficult anyway.…

Gov. Sam Brownback announced Friday that Sam Williams of Wichita will lead an effort to review current procedures related to the revenue estimating process, according to a press release from his office. Budget Director Shawn Sullivan, who was tasked by the Brownback to implement the review, will begin working with Williams to discuss process, schedule and structure for the review. Williams is a retired chief fiscal officer with experience in finance and strategic planning. The review team is tasked with evaluating the existing consensus revenue estimating process, making recommendations for improving the quality of fiscal notes and analyzing existing tax policies.

More than 300 Soldiers with the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, are set to return to Fort Riley Sunday (June 5) after a nine-month deployment to the Central Command area of responsibility. Two welcome-home ceremonies are scheduled for Sunday. The first will be at 1:30 a.m. for about 40 Soldiers. The second will be at 10:45 a.m. for about 300 Soldiers. Detectives with the Riley County Police Department Special Investigations Unit made several arrests related to the distribution of methamphetamine and illegal substances on June 2nd, 2016 at approximately 6:15 PM.  These arrests occurred in the 100 block of Blue Earth Plaza in Manhattan and were related to a joint investigation with the Geary County Sheriff’s Office, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office and the Wamego Police Department.  During the operation methamphetamine, a distributable amount of controlled prescription pills, drug paraphernalia and a stolen firearm were seized.  RCPD would like to thank these agencies for their assistance in this investigation and these arrests. A Chapman man facing aggravated robbery charges in Riley county waived his preliminary hearing Thursday in Riley County District Court. Arraignment for Travis Moreland, 24, is set for June 20th. Moreland was taken into custody by Riley County Police in April on the aggravated robbery warrant, stemming from December of 2015. Moreland also faces robbery charges in Junction City and other jurisdictions, with Dickinson County authorities arresting him in December of last year. Those cases related to hotel robberies that took place in Junction City and Salina.
