TOPEKA — The Kansas Supreme Court plans to hear arguments this week on whether legislators have satisfied a mandate to improve funding for poor schools. Legislators this year made technical changes in how state aid is distributed without affecting most districts’ share or boosting overall state spending. Attorneys for four school districts contend the changes don’t fix the problem because poor school districts aren’t getting enough money. UPDATE 1:54 p.m.: Following the death of an infant last week, a Manhattan man made his first appearance in court Monday afternoon. Andrew Gibson appeared in Riley County Court via webcam from the Riley County Jail. Judge Meryl Wilson granted Gibson’s request for an attorney. The man faces charges of first degree murder and abuse of a child. He’ll next appear in court on May 24. Nearly 200 cars and trucks of various years, models and function were on display during a warm and sunny afternoon in Manhattan’s City Park for the 26th Annual Yard Art Classics Car Show. Riley County Police arrested an Ogden woman for a myriad of drug related crimes. Tara Sotkovski (26) was picked up in the 200 block of 12th Street in Ogden shortly after midnight Friday and was charged with possession of narcotics and possession of hallucinogens. She was also charged with criminal use of weapons and endangering a child under the age of 18. Sotkovoski was held at the Riley County Jail on a $9,000 bond.

WICHITA — A Christian group that promotes marriage at ages as young as 13 won’t be able to use a Salvation Army camp in Wichita for a retreat for parents seeking marital partners for their children. The Wichita Eagle reports that the Let Them Marry ministry wanted to have the retreat at Camp Hiawatha in November. Janet Pack, of the Salvation Army in Wichita, said that the nonprofit inquired about holding the event at the camp, although it was never formally booked. WICHITA — Jurors have sided with a Kansas anti-abortion activist by ruling that she didn’t intentionally seek to intimidate a doctor by sending a letter that suggested someone might place an explosive under the physician’s car. The U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division sued Angel Dillard in 2011 for sending the letter to Dr. Mila Means, who had been training to offer abortions. At the time, no doctor was performing abortions in Wichita in the wake of the 2009 slaying of Dr. George Tiller by an abortion opponent. An Ogden man sentenced for second degree murder for the death of his then-girlfriend’s six-month child was in the Riley County District Courthouse Friday morning for a lengthy motions hearing. Riley County police officers and emergency personnel responded March 15, 2013 to Parkside Apartments in Ogden for a report of a six-month-old infant not breathing. The baby was taken to Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan and then airlifted to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City for treatment where the child died three days later.
