KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Mars Inc. is planning a new, $100 million candy-making facility in Kansas that will be built near where its first new plant in 35 years began churning out sweets last year. The company disclosed the deal Wednesday in advance of a Topeka economic development meeting. Manhattan/Ogden USD 383 School Board members wrapped up budget concerns during Wednesday’s meeting as the board finalized the 2015/2016 school board budget for publication. Cuts to the budget, and ultimately teaching contracts, were blamed on statewide education budget cuts. This movement concerned some teachers and the stability of their programs. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A new report from a group of retired military leaders says the nation’s obesity epidemic is causing significant recruiting problems for the military. One in three young adults nationwide is too overweight to enlist. The report released Wednesday by a group calling itself Mission: Readiness is promoting healthy school lunches to combat the problem. It notes 29 percent of teenagers in Kansas are overweight. Obesity is among the leading causes of military ineligibility among people ages 17 to 24. A Leavenworth man taken into custody following a high-speed chase in Pottawatomie County earlier this month waived a preliminary hearing in Pottawatomie County court Tuesday. Travis Doughty, 19, is now set for an August 20th arraignment. Doughty faces charges of aggravated assault, fleeing to elude, reckless driving, criminal discharge of a firearm, and criminal damage to property charges. He was arrested after a couple hour chase and search, which reportedly began with an alleged shooting incident involving another car in the Carnahan Creek area.
