Former US House Speaker Dennis Hastert is scheduled to make his first court appearance Thursday on charges linked to allegations he agreed to pay $3.5 million in hush money to someone from the Illinois town where he was once a teacher and coach.

A Manhattan man facing several charges for theft and drugs appeared in Riley County District Court for arraignment on Monday afternoon and pled not guilty. Jeremy Spaur’s attorney, Larry McRell stated Spaur wanted to waive reading the charges and requested a jury trial be set. Chief Judge, Meryl Wilson went through each of the charges, which include burglary of a motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia, as Spaur pled “not guilty” to each of them. McRell recommended the trial last two days. It was set for August 27th and 28th.
After several previous arraignment dates were moved, a plea agreement was finally reached in the case of Christopher Hudgins Monday afternoon. Defense Attorney, Tom Addair presented the two page plea agreement and stated the third count against Hudgins would be dismissed by the state. Hudgins pled no contest to the attempted robbery charge and the residential burglary charge. Chief Judge, Meryl Wilson accepted the plea and found Hudgins guilty. Pre-sentencing is set to take place on July 6th at 2:30 p.m. These crimes are connected to a home invasion case where Hudgins reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the face.
Fire caused nearly $100,000 in damage to a home in Junction City Sunday night. The Junction City Fire Department reports at approximately 7:03 PM, the Junction City Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1512 South Spring Valley Road. Fire crews found smoke and flames showing from the rear of a single family structure. A news release from the Junction City Fire Department indicates fire attack crews found fire in rear deck area of the house and performed an aggressive offensive attack while also performing search and rescue as well as ventilation operations. Various Riley County department heads presented their upcoming fiscal year budgets during Monday’s county commission meeting. This was the first day for requests to be made, but they are expected to continue during the upcoming few weeks. Some of the department heads who presented included Register of Deeds, Debbie Regester; County Appraiser, Greg McHenry; and Noxious Weed Director, Dennis Peterson. The county will continue to hear from department heads, but they will also receive requests from various outside entities and organizations that they help fund. An aggravated battery was reported early Monday morning, resulting in the injury of a Manhattan man. Riley County Police indicate at approximately 3:45 AM officers with the Riley County Police Department responded to an aggravated battery in the 1200 block of Moro Street. Officers found Michael Bogle, 26, had become the victim of a verbal argument which turned physical. Bogle was struck in the face leaving injury which required transport by EMS to Via Christi Hospital. These injuries are described as significant, however, non-life threatening. Officers continue to investigate the matter and at the time of this report no suspect descriptions were available.…
A piece of mechanical equipment being lifted by a crane at a Manhattan office building broke free Sunday morning and fell about 28 stories to the sidewalk below, causing minor injuries to 10 people, officials said.
CHICAGO (AP)– David Ross did just fine when he swung away. After failing to execute a safety-squeeze in the ninth inning, Ross hit an RBI single with one out in the 11th inning Sunday that lifted the Chicago Cubs over the Kansas City Royals 2-1. “I’m playing the game out in my head.
