Local bicyclists gathered Thursday evening for a group ride in honor of a friend, brother, and fellow cyclist Mark Jilka, who was killed last week after being hit from behind by a Dodge pickup truck on K-177. “We’re expecting about 80 riders or so. A good way to remember Mark who was just an avid cyclist.” said Phil Jilka, Mark’s older brother “He probably bicycled tens of thousands of miles and hundreds of times up that road where he was hit.” According to police, the driver of the pickup could have been distracted by a cell phone. Case managers have been hard to come by for the Riley County Health Department’s Ryan White program. Over the past few years, the department has been through several case managers. During Thursday’s county commission meeting, Health Department Director, Brenda Nickel presented a possible solution to this problem, involving Positive Connections out of Topeka. She explained the temporary agreement allows the Positive Connections case manager to be co-located at the health department. After a few questions, the commission approved to sign the lease agreement. The Kansas Court of Appeals affirmed a decision from the lower courts Thursday, involving a Riley County police officer who was terminated back in 2010. Previous patrol officer, Sam Hamilton was fired after several reported incidents of violating traffic laws during a number of high speed chases. Hamilton appealed this decision, and went to the county law board regarding the termination. They found the firing was justified, so he then moved on to the county district court, who also agreed with the termination. A Manhattan man originally reported as a victim now finds himself in trouble with the law. The Riley County Police Department reported Wednesday that Gerald Lucking, 24, became the victim of battery Tuesday afternoon, after being shot with a pellet/BB gun in the foot near the intersection of N. Juliette Ave and Laramie Street. Police were then looking for information on a darker color early 2000 SUV with several passengers who may have perpetrated the crime. Manhattan Ogden USD 383 School Board Member, Leah Fliter was selected as the board president during Wednesday night’s board meeting. The election of board officers customary during the first meeting of the fiscal year, and a vice president is also chosen at that time. Board Member, Marcia Rozell was selected as the vice president. The community had a chance to make its voice heard during a first of its kind meeting on Wednesday night at the Manhattan Public Library. Several community members attended, and engaged with representatives from the Riley County Police Community Advisory board (C.A.B.), and law board members in the first ever Riley County Police Department Citizen Forum.
