A Manhattan man accused of first-degree attempted murder appeared in Riley County District Court for his arraignment on Monday, March 9. Samual Dartez, 30, is facing charges in connection with a November incident in which he allegedly stabbed a woman about the face and neck. However, upon arrival in the court room, Dartez stated a request for a new lawyer on his case, delaying the scheduled arraignment. Riley County Police responded to 142 reports and made 46 arrests over the Fake Patty’s Day weekend. County EMS received 66 calls for service, 50 of which were related to the holiday. These were just a few of the numbers presented during Monday’s Riley County Commission meeting. Although RCPD Captain, Josh Kyle did not have any specific numbers regarding the types of arrests and incidents, he did share a few interesting stories. Starting Monday, the westbound outer lane of Kimball Avenue near the K-113 (Seth Child) interchange has been closed for improvements in the area. Wildcat Construction of Topeka will begin work to make signal, ramp and safety improvements at the interchange. Lane reductions will continue throughout the project until May. Traffic will be reduced to one lane at times, and delays should be expected. This is in addition to lane closures near the Seaton Avenue intersection, where stormwater improvements will keep access to Seaton Avenue closed until early April. A detour is in place.
Riley County Police are investigating an incident reportedly involving robbery, battery, and intimidation of a witness. The case was reported Sunday at approximately 1:45 AM near the intersection of 17th Street and Anderson Avenue. Police were made aware of this incident which involved a male and female (known to each other) who had begun to argue inside a vehicle. This argument became physical when the male struck the female in the face. After pulling over and exiting the vehicle the male reportedly broke the female’s phone as she attempted to contact police. Updated 6 a.m. More details have been released regarding an early Sunday morning accident in Riley County, previously reported as having occurred Saturday morning. Shane Hancock, 23, of Manhattan was westbound in the 700 block of Allison Road at about one a.m. Sunday, when the 2005 Honda he was driving failed to negotiate a curve, left the roadway, and came to rest in a ravine on its top. The Kansas Highway Patrol lists Hancock as having a possible injury. Two occupants were listed as injured, including Joshua White, 33, of Salina and Shanel Garnett, 24, of Manhattan. (AP) As KMAN announced earlier this weekend, authorities say a staffer for Congressman Tim Huelskamp with Manhattan connections has been arrested and charged with 17 counts of sexual exploitation of a child.A Ford County jail official told The Associated Press on Saturday that Matthew P. Curtis Cline, 19, of Manhattan faces a drug-related possession charge, purchase or consumption of alcohol as a minor, and resisting arrest.
