With finals week wrapping up for Kansas State University students, the Riley County Police Department has been concentrating extra effort in a few locations this month. During Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting, Assistant Police Department Director, John Doehling said traditionally around this time of the year, there is an increased number of individuals in the Pillsbury Crossing area. Many students flee to the area to drink and socialize in May. Doehling said officers have given out several alcohol violations and citations, and have experienced a few unique incidents. (Accident update from Wednesday afternoon in separate story) A 21-year-old Manhattan man was arrested early Thursday morning on a variety of charges including aggravated burglary and drug-related counts. Police arrested Drew Smading for aggravated burglary, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of MDMA, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Smading’s bond was set at $18,000. Police report they caught up with Smading after he entered the Pizza Hut on Moro Street and removed items that did not belong to him. Another guard from the junior college ranks has been added to the K-State women’s basketball roster. New Wildcat head coach Jeff Mittie signed 5-foot-8 shooting guard Deborah Meeks of three-time defending national JuCO champion Trinity Valley Community College in Fort Worth, Texas. Meeks averaged 9.6 points and 2.7 assists per game, and was named to the national all-tournament team. Meeks spent two seasons at the University of Washington before transferring to Trinity Valley. She redshirted her first year with the Huskies due to an ACL injury during her senior season of high school, and played in just two games the…
California officials say 21,000 evacuation notices were sent to residents of San Marcos, north of San Diego. Also, 10,000 students were told to evacuate a local college campus. A huge fire broke out in San Marcos on Wednesday.

Junction City Police announced early Thursday morning two drug-related arrests Wednesday. Lindsy Moles, 28, and Steven Crotchett, 29, both of Junction City, were taken into custody shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday in the 700 block of West 13th Street. Crotchett’s charges include sale or distribution of a controlled substance and felony possession charges. Moles’ charges are possession related.
Local residents gathered Wednesday evening at the Fire Department Headquarters to participate in a workshop for an update to the Manhattan Urban Area Comprehensive Plan. Assistant Director for planning, Eric Cattell says the original Comprehensive Plan was created 11 years ago and was expected to last for 20-25 years, but dramatic growth in the area prompted the need for an update. “Right after that plan was adopted in 2003, we had the 2005 BRAC process with Fort Riley,” Cattell said. “So between Fort Riley growth and just growth within the community at K-State and other areas, it just seemed like it was time to revisit the…
