It was a good night to be a Tribe hoops fan Friday at Highland Park with MHS getting the clean sweep over the Scots in key Centennial League match ups. The MHS girls struggled offensively in the first half shooting 33% from the field but still led 20-16 at the break. The Indians would outscore the Lady Scots 37-14 in the second half to turn a tight game into a 57-28 blowout. Around 250 local leaders met for the 2015 Flint Hills Leader’s Retreat in Overland Park on Friday.  Attendees included commissioners, business owners, and organizers from the Riley, Pottawatomie and Geary County areas. Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce President, Lyle Butler began the two day event with a word of welcome and thanked the sponsors of the event.  He mentioned most conferences request that people put away their cell phones, but a new part of this year’s retreat involved the utilization of cell phones.  Following each of the different presentations, participants were asked to answer different questions via text message.  The…

Linda Morse filed for a position on Manhattan’s City Commission this morning.  She is a long-time resident of Manhattan and a recent retiree of Kansas State University. Morse is “excited that Manhattan is one of the economic bright spots in Kansas, but cautions, however, that wise decisions and management of resources will be critical to our future.” Morse says she has a great interest in the new Comprehensive Land Use Plan that is underway.  Morse has served for six years on the Manhattan Urban Area Planning Board and several years ago served on the Riley County Land Use Plan.  Policies…

A St. George man faces a large bond after his arrest by Riley County Police Thursday afternoon. Colton Magnuson, 24, was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in court, with an original offense of driving while suspended or revoked and driving while a habitual violator. Magnuson  was arrested while at the Riley County Police Department and issued a bond of $10,000. ### Riley County Police arrested a Herrington man Thursday night, with an original offense of aggravated false impersonation. Manhattan/Ogden USD 383 School Board President Leah Fliter is running for re-election to the Board of Education. Fliter announced her intentions Friday morning. She has been on the board for about four years. But Fliter points to another experience which prepared her to serve on the board. Prior to that, Fliter also spent four years covering the school board as a reporter for the Manhattan Mercury. According to a police report released at 3 p.m. Friday Joel Groninga, who had been reported missing by his family late Thursday was found by authorities in Salina.  Groninga was found unharmed, but apparently was having vehicle trouble that caused a delay. No further information was available.

USD 383 School Board member Curt Herrman recently announced his intentions to run for another term in Manhattan and Ogden Schools. A few pressing issues Herrman plans to address are the school budgets at both the state and local levels, as well as federal issues pertaining to the No Child Left Behind Act. Herrman also mentions the need to take a look at space challenges in local schools, as the student population continues to rise.
