A Riley man has announced his candidacy for the position one seat in the USD 378 school board. Glen Hawkins says his military background has taught him how to lead, and use resources efficiently to accomplish the mission.  Hawkins says he will use his knowledge to guide the district forward, and provide insight into minimizing costs while providing a quality education. Hawkins states his desire to support his community has led him to run for the office.

The Wamego Police Department has been notified that local businesses have received fraudulent telephone calls from people claiming to be with the City of Wamego trying to “collect on overdue electric bills.” Another business received a fraudulent call from someone claiming to be with Westar Energy, also “collecting on overdue electric bills.” These individuals are seeking credit card numbers from businesses or hoping to have money wired to an account in order to “avoid disconnection of their electrical service.” Those who receive such a call are advised not to share financial information and to report the fraudulent activity to…

A preliminary hearing has been set for a 40-year-old Fort Riley soldier facing charges of sexual exploitation of a child, rape, and aggravated sodomy. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A state district court panel has ruled that Kansas isn’t spending enough money on its public schools to provide a suitable education for every child. The three judges on Tuesday did not set a specific figure but said evidence indicates the state needs to spend at least $548 million more a year. An attempt by Republican Gov. Sam Brownback and the GOP-dominated Legislature to comply would complicate efforts to close state budget shortfalls.
