The first snow has fell in Riley County and several accidents were reported throughout the county on Thursday.  For this reason, Riley County Police Department Director, Brad Schoen shared some winter weather travel tips during the county commission meeting that morning. Schoen reminded local residents that we live in a transit community, which means many of the people are not used to driving in snow.  Schoen encouraged people to be cautious and drive slow. In what some are calling a sudden move, President Barack Obama is trying to re-establish ties with Cuba after nearly 60 years. U-S Senator Jerry Moran of Manhattan reminded KMAN in a live interview Thursday morning he supports the effort in at least one respect–when it comes to agricultural trade and increased travel for U-S and Cuban citizens between the two countries. Moran says no other country abides by the embargo, meaning the United States has been on its own. (A separate release is listed regarding a drug-related arrest) A Wichita man is hospitalized following a vehicle roll-over collision near the 1800 block of Claflin Road reported at approximately 5:20 Wednesday evening. Riley County Police responded to the scene and found that a 2006 Dodge Stratus driven by  Katie Jarvis, 25 of Manhattan had rolled onto its hood after a 1993 Ford F-150 collided with it. The Ford truck was driven by Steven Villalobos, 49, of Wichita. The collision occurred as the Dodge Stratus was turning east out of a parking lot and damage was created on the vehicle’s passenger side.…

A Manhattan teenager has been arrested for a variety of drug-related offenses. Riley County Police report Connor Yeager, 19, was taken into custody at about seven Wednesday evening as part of the ongoing investigation into the distribution of illegal narcotics in the Manhattan and Riley County area.This arrest took place in the 3200 block of Kimball Avenue. Yeager’s bond was set at $35,000, with charges including possession of marijuana and Xanax with intent to distribute, four counts of unlawful use of a telecommunication device, and three counts of distribution of marijuana. Three Cuban agents who had been jailed in Florida returned to Cuba on Wednesday. Cuban President Raul Castro greeted them in Havana. They were released as the US and Cuba announced a sudden thaw in relations.

Updated 5 a.m. Thursday: Manhattan and Riley and Pottawatomie county road crews are out plowing and treating snowy roads. Thursday morning’s incident report from Riley county Police show at least four non-injury accidents since late Wednesday night. A spokesman with the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s office reports some slide-offs during the early morning hours. The Kansas Highway Patrol has no reports of accidents in area counties. ### At 11:00 p.m. the roads are very slick, but the winter equipment is out and clearing roads.  Several stuck vehicles were witnessed at this time, and this reporter advised using extreme caution when…

Several people were acknowledged during the special recognition portion of the Manhattan Ogden USD 383 School Board meeting Wednesday evening. Manhattan High School Principal, Greg Hoyt was recently awarded North Central Kansas District Administrator of the Year.  This is a KMEA award which is given based off of letters of recommendation.  Northview Elementary School Music Teacher, Laurie Davis was also recognized by the KMEA as North Central Kansas Elementary Music Teacher of the Year.
