Advanced voting polls closed at noon on Monday, and numbers had already surpassed the previous gubernatorial election statistics. Riley County Clerk, Rich Vargo reported during Monday’s county commission meeting that 3,145 county residents had participated in advanced voting in person as of Saturday. 892 ballots had also been received in the mail at that point. Vargo said, “with those figures, we are at 4,037 so far that have participated, which has exceeded the 2010 numbers.  We had 3,250 that year.  So we’ll beat 2010’s numbers by over a thousand easily”. Day one of the jury trial for the man charged in the case where a pest control man was found dead, was held Monday in Riley County District Court. After several years of being found incompetent enough to withstand a trial, Howard Barrett (58) was finally cleared to stand trial.  Barrett is charged in the stabbing death of Thomas James (48) of Clay Center.  This incident reportedly happened on Valentine’s Day in 2008. Barrett appeared before Judge David L. Stutzman in his courtroom. Prosecuting State Attorney, Barry Wilkerson called witnesses to the stand throughout the day, several of which were investigators…

A Pottawatomie County development will involve quite a few infrastructure improvements–but commissioners only received one bid for the project at Monday’s meeting. Commission Chair Stan Hartwich adds the bid did come in under what had been anticipated though. Commissioners opened the one bid for the Wildcat Woods Phase III infrastructure, which includes street, sewer and water improvements. The lone bid came from Larson Construction in Manhattan, for $207,249.50, which was a little lower than the engineer estimate of $209,937. According to Kansas Highway Patrol reports an accident involving two vehicles traveling westbound on I-70 on Sunday led to two possible injuries, and an overturned vehicle. The police report states that 26-year-old Tosan Ehiguese lost control while changing lanes, and struck 52-year-old Elizabeth Dodd in the rear of her vehicle 8.5 miles east of exit 313.  Ehiguese’s 2006 Nissan overturned in the accident, and KHP lists his injuries as “possible”.  Dodd was listed as having possible injuries as well, and was transported to Mercy Regional Health Center.  Both Dodd, and Ehiguese reside in Manhattan. No other information has been released…
