A Manhattan woman pleaded guilty Monday to taking part in a marriage fraud scheme, according to U.S. Attorney, Barry Grissom. Jacqueline Reed (48) pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit marriage fraud.  In her plea, Reed admitted she entered into a marriage contract with co-defendant, Yun Chiu, for the purpose of evading U.S. immigration laws.  Chiu was seeking lawful permanent residency status in the U.S.  Their arrangement was part of a conspiracy led by Quong Bow Low, who was paid for helping aliens seek residency. Reed and Chiu submitted fraudulent paperwork to immigration authorities, including a marriage license…

A 57-year-old man convicted of aggravated indecent liberties and solicitation of a child nearly 20 years ago is up for public comment sessions and possible parole. Chester Sexton was convicted of the two indecent liberties charges in connection with a 1995 case. Public comment sessions for Sexton and others will be December eighth at Kansas City’s City Hall, December 10th at the Derby Police and Courts Building, and December 12th at Topeka’s Municipal Court House. Letters may be sent to the Kansas Department of Corrections in Topeka. Sexton’s parole hearing will be held in January, with the earliest release from incarceration…

The 1st Infantry Division’s headquarters will case its colors in a ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fort Riley’s Victory Park in preparation for its deployment to the Central Command area of responsibility. About 200 Soldiers from the Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion will deploy to Baghdad and Irbil, Iraq, as part of the nation’s strategy to degrade and destroy ISIL. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) Kansas State Fair manager Denny Stoecklein is crediting good weather and enticing entertainment for a boost in attendance at this year’s fair. The Hutchinson News reports audited numbers announced Monday show 355,329 visitors attended the fair, which ran Sept. 5-14. This year’s gate was up by about 15,000 people from 2013 and the highest in 16 years. Stoecklein says it was also the fourth-highest attendance of all time although that statistic is unofficial, because audited attendance only began in 1978. An ambulance transports Ashoka Mukpo, who contracted Ebola while working in Liberia, to the Nebraska Medical Center’s specialized isolation unit Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, in Omaha, Neb., where he will be treated for the deadly disease. Mukpo is an American video journalist who was working in Liberia as a freelance cameraman for NBC News when he became ill last week.
