LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A 19-year-old Lawrence woman has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a businessman whose home she shared. Sarah Brooke Gonzales McLinn had been the subject of a search since the body of Harold Sasko (52) was found Jan. 17. Lawrence Police Chief Tarik Khatib says park rangers found McLinn on Sunday camping in Everglades National Park in Florida. McLinn was in federal custody in Homestead, Fla. Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson filed the murder charge Monday and said McLinn will be extradited to Kansas. Authorities had refused to say during the search for…

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Two California brothers who tried to steal a truckload of beef from a southwest Kansas slaughterhouse are facing sentencing in federal court. Oganes Nagapetian has asked for leniency at Monday’s hearing. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit interstate shipment fraud. Tigran Nagapetian pleaded guilty to the less serious crime of hiding a felony for lying to authorities and concealing his brother’s actions. Both are from North Hollywood, Calif. The brothers were charged with trying to steal nearly $88,000 worth of packaged beef from Tyson Fresh Meats in Holcomb by posing as legitimate freight haulers. Authorities say…

Though a few technical problems started off the conference call between Pottawatomie, Jackson, and Wabaunsee counties, the meeting soon got underway concerning the Juvenile Justice Board. With the director of the board leaving, a new one will need to be chosen.  However, before that can be done, the board must have a few places filled.   A proposed fieldhouse project was discussed by intergovernmental leaders Monday, with the city of Manhattan bringing the item up. City Manager Ron Fehr and Mayor John Matta talked about getting several governmental groups together on the matter, especially on a tournament front.   Manhattan Parks and Recreation Director Eddie Eastes was quiet during much of the discussion,but finally spoke up, saying he’d seen a lot of plans as he was cleaning out his office recently.
