OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A National Transportation Safety Board report on an Oklahoma plane crash that killed two Kansas men says a part of the aircraft was found more than a mile from the crash site. The April 7, 2013, crash killed retired gynecologist Ronald Marshall of Manhattan, Kansas, and Chris Gruber, the development director for the college of veterinary medicine at Kansas State University in Manhattan. The NTSB factual report released Wednesday says the fiberglass belly skin panel of the plane was found about 1.4 miles from the site. It does not offer a suspected cause of the crash. The…

A Leonardville man facing a second degree murder charge in a 2008 case in Riley County is now set for an October first hearing.  Howard Barrett, 58, is accused in the February 2008 stabbing death of  Thomas James, 48, of Clay Center, who was trying to do pest control work in Barrett’s apartment in Leonardville. The new hearing date was set earlier in the week (Juy 15th). TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Republican group wants a Kansas state representative to apologize for characterizing GOP politicians supporting a Democratic candidate as “nursing home” residents. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis announced earlier through Republicans for Kansas Values that dozens of former and current GOP officials endorsed him rather than likely GOP nominee Gov. Sam Brownback in the 2014 election. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Republicans for Kansas Values wants an apology from Republican State Rep. J.R. Could Manhattan, Pottawatomie County, and Riley County residents face a tax for the Manhattan Area Technical College in the future?  This was a question addressed during Thursday’s joint city/county meeting, held at City Hall on Poyntz Avenue. MATC President, Rob Edleston stressed the need for funding, as they have raised tuition every year for the past decade. On Thursday afternoon the Riley County Police department assaulted several members of the news media…. Those who signed a waiver anyway for a demonstration of the police force’s use of TASER platforms within the community. One of the community members also stepped up to experience the effects of TASERs. After a long interview process, a new Riley County Information Technology/GIS Director has been selected. According to Human Resources Director, Cindy Volanti, the county commission made the decision to select current Director of IT Production Services at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Kevin Howser as the new IT/GIS Director.  Although the decision was made a week ago, the action form was signed by the commission during Thursday’s meeting, that officially approved the new hire.
