K-State athletics director John Currie announced Wednesday that K-State’s athletic budget will increase by $5.65 million to a total of $65.7 million for the 2015 fiscal year. This is up 49 percent from the 2010 budget of $44.1 million. Currie also noted in his latest letter to K-State fans that the 2014 fiscal year was the fifth straight year with a balanced budget and a surplus. The City of Manhattan Public Works Department issued a release Wednesday morning involving road construction on Kimball Avenue. Starting on Sunday, Kimball Avenue, from North Manhattan Avenue to Tuttle Creek Boulevard, will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. This will be ongoing for approximately four to six weeks during the work week. City of Manhattan street crews will be repairing the failing concrete joints between the panels along Kimball Avenue. The Wamego City Commission looked at rezoning issues. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager, Merl Page introduced two rezoning requests. According to Page, the Planning Commission unanimously approved the request from Construction, Inc.’s Dave Karnowski to rezone his property in the Industrial Park from an I-P to a C-S, in order to expand and add additional camp sites east of the current RV Park location. The Manhattan City Commission unanimously voted Tuesday to prohibit the open-carry of firearms in 50 City buildings. “The City can prohibit open carry by the public in City buildings if it has a sign posted at all the entrances,” said Katie Jackson, assistant city attorney. Mayor Wynn Butler recognized that simply posting a sign wouldn’t physically keep anyone from openly carrying their firearm into a building, but said that cost-wise, signs are the City’s most viable option.
