Two preliminary hearings that had been set for this past week in Geary County District Court have been continued. Christopher and Tammerisk Lyman of Junction City, who were scheduled for June fourth, will now have a preliminary hearing September third. Christopher Lyman’s charges include first degree murder and child abuse. Tammerisk Lyman is charged with aggravated child endangerment. The two were arrested last September after an eight-month-old child was brought into the emergency room at Geary Community Hospital, then transported by helicopter to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. The Paws on Poyntz Committee has had to make the unfortunate decision to cancel the 13th Annual Weenie Dog Races and Paws on Poyntz due to expected bad weather in the morning hours of Saturday, June 7th. Part of the organizers decision is due to the fact that chalk paint is used to mark out the race track and that cannot be done in either the rain or on wet pavement. There are also concerns about the forecast calling for a 70% chance of thunderstorms throughout Saturday morning and must take into consideration the number of children at the event.…

Subway train operators, along with some activists, clash with police at the Ana Rosa metro station on the second day of their metro strike in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Friday, June 6, 2014. The workers clashed with police as they tried to block other operators from breaking the strike. A year after the Cleveland Indians picked K-State’s Ross Kivett in the tenth round, the Detroit Tigers took Kivett with pick number 190 in the sixth round of the MLB draft Friday. Kivett spent most of his K-State career at second base, but he was listed as a center fielder when the Tigers made their selection. He was moved to center field early in the 2014 season to better accommodate the rest of the K-State lineup. The election for Pottawatomie County Commissioner of District One is scheduled for August.  Current Commissioner Gary Yenzer has been challenged by Dee McKee, a last minute filing, as KMAN recently reported. Yenzer has served as the County Commissioner for the last four years.  Yenzer says he’s always felt like a “public servant” and looks forward to continue his work with the people of Pottawatomie County. “It’s in my nature, I like to work with people, and help people out as much as I can.” Yenzer retired after 17 years as a St. George volunteer firefighter.  His experience also extends to Riley County where…

Manhattan High was well represented on the 2014 6A All-State baseball team. Outfielder Brett Fehr and designated hitter Jacob Biller were both first team selections and played in the KABC All-State game earlier this week at Tointon Family Stadium. Both of the MHS aces on the mound were honored, with Jesse Steinbring named to the second team and Henry deNoble receiving honorable mention. First baseman Chris Klug and outfielder Kellen Myers also picked up honorable mention honors. The Indians racked up a school record 22 wins on their way to a Centennial League championship and third place finish at state.

Two arrests were made following the execution of a search warrant in Junction City early Friday morning.   Steven Simpson, 24, and Bethany Johnson, 25, both of Junction City, face a variety of charges, with Simpson charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Both face charges of felony possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and endangering a child. They were confined at the Geary County Detention Center pending first appearance in Geary County District Court.   The search warrant was executed in the 2600 block of Strauss Boulevard after a month-long investigation by the Junction City-Geary County Drug operations group.

A domestic battery-related arrest was made by Riley County Police at approximately 7:30 PM Thursday in Ogden.  Police responded to a complaint of a heated altercation between persons known to each other.   Alvin Mason, 30, of Junction City was arrested for domestic battery, criminal damage to property, intimidation of a victim or witness, as well as two warrants for failure to appear, with the original offenses of domestic battery and driving while suspended. This arrest came after Mason reportedly damaged a cell phone which belonged to the 25-year-old female victim while she was on the phone with 911 reporting the domestic battery.  …
