Gov. Sam Brownback lead a group of state officials and outdoor enthusiasts on a float trip along a stretch of the Kansas River, Thursday morning. Approximately 100 people participated in the float trip, which started in Wamego and ended about 10 miles downstream in Belvue. The canoe and kayak excursion was part of the administration’s efforts to promote the recreational and economic value of the 173-mile river. The Kansas River was designated in July 2012 as a National River Trail by the U.S. Department of Interior, one of about a dozen nationwide.

KMAN received word Thursday afternoon that a woman employed at Seth Child Cinema was fired and has received death threats after posting a negative comment on Facebook about the military. According to the woman’s Facebook page, she was once a staff leader at the theater. KMAN is still waiting for a comment from Carmike Cinema’s corporate office.

Yet another meeting on proposed new flood maps was held Wednesday evening, just a night after the Manhattan city Commission examined the matter. City Floodplain Manager Chad Bunger tells KMAN there were actually two sessions Wednesday night, one for professionals such as realtors and the other for general members of the public. Bunger adds the turnout was good at both sessions. A total of 100 people signed in and Bunger says with those people came questions. Topics on Thursday’s Riley County Commission agenda ranged from increasing driver’s license fees to adding a temporary bailiff to the district court. The first work session held during the meeting, featured a “Certificate of Survey” for the parking lot purchase that has been discussed during previous meetings. County Counselor, Clancy Holeman presented this item. Nothing was approved, and he will return with edited language during a later date. Jury selection lasted most of Wednesday in a change of venue murder case, being heard in Riley County District Court. Antonio M. Brown Sr., 29, faces charges in connection with the beating death of a 14-month-old child nearly two years ago. The mother of the child has already been convicted of second degree murder and has been sentenced to 13 years in prison. KMAN news reported on the case several times earlier this year, with Brown escaping from prison in February. The Royals entered Wednesday four games behind Cleveland for the second wild-card berth with five games to play. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have benched former K-State quarterback Josh Freeman and replaced him with rookie Mike Glennon. The move Wednesday came two days after coach Greg Schiano insisted Freeman remained the starter because he gave the team the best chance to win. The winless Bucs have lost their first three games, two on field goals in the closing seconds. Freeman has completed just 45.7 percent of his passes for 571 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
