There was some cheer and emotion at Wednesday night’s Manhattan Ogden school board meeting as some discussion came of the Friday shooting in Newtown, Connecticut and the issue of safety in schools. Superintendent Bob Shannon went over a number of changes that the district has seen over the last few years because of the bond issue, including the ability to secure classrooms from inside. A Junction City man tried to lie about who he is, and ended up picking a criminal as his false identity. Carlton Solton Jr.(27) was arrested during the early morning hours Wednesday in the 500 block of Stone Drive. Police responded to the residence due to a report of an altercation.  Solton was one of the individuals in the altercation, but when asked who he was, he lied and gave a different name.  The name he gave RCPD showed warrants out for that individual’s arrest. Solton was arrested for interference with the legal process and false information.  His bond was…

Riley County Police are requesting help in identifying a suspect who stole over 80 items from a local business. Around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, owner of Grand Slam Sports, Michael Thompson (62) received a call from the owner of the store next door.  The owner claimed he thought the sports store had been robbed and he had images of the suspect on his surveillance camera.  Thompson called RCPD to report that entry had been made into his store by breaking the glass to the front door.  Once inside, the suspect took ten pairs of Mizuno Sport shoes, 70 baseball bats and a purple baseball bag. The Wamego City Commission observed a moment of silence. At Tuesday’s meeting, Commissioner Cliff Baughman  opened the meeting by asking for a moment of silence to remember the victims of Newtown and the two slain Police Officers in Topeka. In other business, City Manager Merl Page announced receiving a challenge from the City Council of Creswell, Oregon, on the outcome of the Fiesta Bowl. The Manhattan City Commission decided to deny the rezoning ordinance of land located at 1845  College Heights road which would have allowed a high density living complex to be built near the university. Residents came out to voice their opinions on both sides of the conflict, but the commission followed the Manhattan Urban Area Planning Board’s recommendation to deny the project.  The planning board voted unanimously to deny the ordinance  due to the project failing to follow the city’s comprehensive plan, and strains on city infrastructures such as traffic and drainage systems.
