TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The president and CEO of Heritage Bank in Topeka says a fraud scheme cost the bank $712,145 last year. Ernie Beaudet testified about the loss Wednesday at a hearing for 40-year-old Jennifer Hughes-Boyles, a former vice president at the bank. Hughes-Boyles pleaded guilty in February to fraud. Hughes-Boyles was scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday. But the sentencing was delayed after attorneys received new reports on the bank’s losses earlier in the day. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Kansas farmers are finding wide variations in quality and yield after nearly a week of the winter wheat harvest. The latest daily bulletin put out Wednesday by industry groups reported the harvest 30 percent complete in Pratt County. The elevator in Iuka reports good yields in that area, with most fields averaging between 40 and 45 bushels per acre. Farmers around Hoisington in Barton County have been cutting for four days, and the crop in that area is not doing as well as expected. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) The Wichita School District and its teachers union have declared an impasse in contract talks following a heated negotiation session that district officials called adversarial. The Wichita Eagle reports the district will seek federal mediation to settle the contract dispute with its 4,000 teachers after talks broke down Wednesday. Negotiations began in March on a new contract to take effect in August. Major sticking points have included teacher evaluations, lesson plans, dress codes and classroom discipline. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Historical Society is inviting amateur archaeologists to take part in a summer dig and field school. Participants will be digging from Saturday through June 17 at the Kansa Indian site of Fool’s Chief Village, located on Topeka’s north side. Artifacts will be excavated, cleaned and catalogued at a field laboratory. The Historical Society and the Kansas Anthropological Society are sponsoring the dig. (AP)   The Big 12 favors a four-team playoff to decide college football’s national champion, and supports some kind of selection committee to determine its participants.  Interim commissioner Chuck Neinas also said the league is content with 10 members after inviting TCU and West Virginia, though he left open the possibility of revisiting expansion.  Neinas spoke after meeting with Big 12 athletic directors Tuesday in Kansas City.  Several configurations of a four-team playoff are being presented at conference meetings around the country.  How the teams will be picked is one of the items up for debate.  Neinas…

Nineteen wins and a 4th place finish in the 6A state tournament, that’s the haul for the Manhattan High baseball team this season.  The Indians had 12 players recognized when the all-Centennial Team was announced.  Four seniors made the first team, shortstop Derek Francis, outfielders Brooks DeBord and Chris Turner, along with catcher Brooks Lindsay.  Senior outfielder Taylor Hilgers maded the second team, as did pitchers Trey Francis, a senior, and junior TJ Giller.  Chad Fiser, Chris Klug, Josh Klug, Josh Mullin, and Jake Priddle all received honorable mention.

The Manhattan Tournament of Champions turns 20 this weekend.  The annual American Legion Baseball tournament got underway Thursday, and the Manhattan Manko 17’ers Senior and Junior teams take the field on Thursday night at Tointon Family Stadium.  The 19 and Under Manko squad will open with the Hays Eagles at 6:30pm, while the 17 and Under team faces the Salina Hawks at 8:30.  Round robin action continues Friday and Saturday, with a four-team bracket on Sunday for both divisions.
