IRVING, Texas (AP) The Big 12 Conference has scheduled a Friday news conference to introduce former Stanford University athletic director Bob Bowlsby as the new conference commissioner. The news conference is scheduled for the conference headquarters in the Dallas suburb of Irving. He’ll succeed interim commissioner Chuck Neinas, who succeeded the ousted Dan Beebe in September. Bowlsby is scheduled to take the Big 12 reins on June 15 after six years running the Stanford athletic programs. (AP) Mike Moustakas matched a career high with three RBIs and made a defensive gem in the ninth, helping the Kansas City Royals to a 4-3 victory Thursday night over the New York Yankees, who were anxiously awaiting news on injured closer Mariano Rivera. Baseball’s career saves leader twisted his right knee while shagging fly balls near the outfield wall during batting practice. MANHATTAN, Kan. – Bruce Weber landed his second 2012 recruit Thursday as Michael Orris announced his intention to play at Kansas State next season. A three-star prospect according to Rivals.com, Orris averaged 10.2 points and 6.2 assists this past season as a senior at Crete (Ill.) Monee, helping lead the Warriors to a 25-4 record and the school’s first-ever sectional championship. ATLANTA (AP) More than 100 former NFL players have filed a federal lawsuit in Atlanta claiming that pro football didn’t properly protect its players from concussions. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit include former Atlanta Falcon Jamal Anderson, ex-Georgia star Lindsey Scott and veteran quarterback Don Majkowski. The lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court in Georgia, claims the league failed to protect NFL players from brain injuries linked to football-related concussions. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Kansas City Royals have put infielder Yuniesky Betancourt on the disabled list with a sprained right ankle and purchased the contract of Irving Falu from Triple-A Omaha. The move was made before Thursday night’s game against the New York Yankees. Betancourt hurt the ankle toward the end of spring training, but still managed to play in 15 of the Royals’ first 23 games. He was hitting .280 with a homer and three RBIs. Federal indictments in Topeka include one for a Geary County case that occurred last month. Fidel Hernandez-Jaracuaro, 42, who is not a United States citizen, is charged with unlawfully re-entering the country after being convicted of an aggravated felony and deported. Hernanez-Jaracuaro was found in Geary county April fourth. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to 250-thousand dollars. The Department of Homeland Security investigated the case.
A man convicted in a 1982 Riley county second degree murder case has apparently been passed over for parole. Michael Long, 58, was sentenced in March of 1983 in connection with the case, occurring in August of 1982. Long’s next possible release date is May of 2014. He is currently incarcerated at the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility and has been there most of the 29 years he’s served.
