LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A former Kansas State University English professor is challenging the legality of his prison sentence for a first-degree murder conviction in the death of his ex-wife. Thomas E. Murray is serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years for the stabbing death of Carmin Ross, whose body was found in November 2003 in her home north of Lawrence. Murray filed a lawsuit in Douglas County District Court claiming there were problems with the state’s DNA evidence at his trial. SEATTLE (AP) Ichiro Suzuki had four hits, including a homer, to help the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 on Friday night. Miguel Olivo and Justin Smoak each added three hits for the Mariners. Olivo fell a single short of the cycle. Luis Aguirre’s defense attorney’s attempted unsuccessfully to remove the death penalty option from the table in the case. Aguirre is accused of killing his 18 -year-old girlfriend Tanya Maldanado, and her 15-month-old son Juan Maldanado in 2009. Judge Meryl Wilson ruled that the case met all of the requirements to allow prosecutors to pursue the death penalty. The Next motions hearing will be held on October 19th.

With many years left until fulfilled completion, the K-State 2025 campaign is being given a lot of attention in 2011. University President Kirk Schultz along with Senior Vice President and Provost April Mason addressed members of the media and officials from both the city of Manhattan and Riley County. The regular season got underway on Thursday as the reigning Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers matched up with the New Orleans Saints. Two former K-State players found the endzone in the contest. The Packers Jordy Nelson hauled in a 3-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. K-State’s all-time leading rusher Darren Sproles returned a punt 72 yards for a score for the Saints late in the first half. It was Nelson’s Packers who got the better of the Saints, as Green Bay eked out a 42-34 win at Lambeau Field.

Nearly 20 firefighters from Manhattan and Junction City fire departments will be participating in a 110 story memorial stair climb in Kansas City this coming weekend, to recognize the 343 firefighters lost on 9/11 of 2001. Manhattan Firefighter Matt Carlson says it puts things in perspective. Carlson says the dozen participants from M-F-D represent a range of positions from student firefighters to a chief officer. Junction City Firefighter Nathan Dixon tells KMAN each participant will represent one of the 343 firefighters killed on that day.
