Following the Friday release of video showing the brutal beating death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of Memphis Police officers, Riley County Police Department Director Brian Peete has issued a statement condemning the violence. In a letter to the community released on Monday, Peete says that while he doesn’t know specifics about what happened in Memphis, he has watched the videos and says “it’s abundantly clear that the officers involved failed to utilize appropriate training when arresting Mr. Nichols. Most importantly they didn’t recognize Mr. Nichols as a human, undeserving of the numerous terrorizing attacks they levied against him.…

Elected officials are required to review districts to ensure equal population rates. Riley County residents comprise three districts, each represented by a commissioner. The districts were contiguous to each other years ago. County Clerk Rich Vargo explains. Vargo says the districts must be less than a 5% variation in population, and the current districts are within that range. However, District 1 (John Ford’s district) has current population of 21,683, which is 30.13% of the county population. A Manhattan man was jailed Saturday evening following a domestic incident in the 700 block of Dondee Drive. RCPD arrested 31-year-old Bryan Mosley on charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, domestic battery, criminal threat, intimidation of a witness and aggravated assault. Police say a 28-year-old woman reported that Mosley hit her, took her cell phone and threw it against a wall after she tried to call 911, prevented her from leaving the residence and held a knife at her throat. Mosley remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a bond of $80,000.

Kansas State University honored the life and legacy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with their annual candle lighting and wreath laying ceremony on campus Friday. Prior to the laying of the wreaths next to Dr. King’s bust outside of Ahearn Fieldhouse, members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity held their candle lighting ceremony.
