K-State sophomore Terrence Spurlin was named Big 12 Player of the Week while junior Chris Ceballos was tabbed Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Spurlin, a 6-foot-1 first baseman from Cypress, Texas, produced back-to-back three-hit games in the Wildcats’ three-game series with West Virginia over the weekend. Spurlin hit two home runs and drove in four in an 8-6 win over the Mountaineers on Saturday before a 3-for-4 effort in Sunday’s finale.
Spurlin finished the week with a slash line of .545/.600/1.091 and six runs batted in, leading the Big 12 in average and slugging percentage. He tied for the conference lead with his six hits, four runs scored and two home runs.
Ceballos equaled Spurlin’s six hits, two home runs and six runs batted in to pace the league over the week. The junior-college transfer went 6-for-15 (.400) and slugged .867 in four games. Ceballos went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI against Texas Southern last Tuesday and hit a two-run home run in a 2-for-4 effort in the Wildcats’ Saturday win over the Mountaineers.
Ceballos, a catcher from Chino Hills, California, registered a base hit and an RBI in three of four games last week. He is the team leader with nine home runs and 37 runs batted in on the season.
Spurlin and Ceballos each earn the first weekly honors in their respective careers. Ceballos joins freshman pitchers Griffin Hassall and Jordan Wicks as Newcomers of the Week this season.
