With Fake Patty’s Day coming up this weekend, the Riley County Police Department has been preparing well in advance for the influx of people that come for the event.
While claims were made on social media by college students in the area that RCPD was attempting to cancel Fake Patty’s day, RCPD Director Brian Peete, who joined KMAN’s In Focus Thursday, emphasizes that isn’t the case, but tempers it with the need for citizens who engage in the festivities to abide by city code and make good decisions.
Last year, several residents who lived nearby complained to police and city officials about
Peete also noted that in the aftermath of Fake Patty’s, the police department and crisis response center see an annual increase in reports of avoidable crimes.
Tied to that, Peete says RCPD recognizes the unease some members of the community feel about the annual festivities considering the fatal shooting that happened at the Super Bowl Parade for the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 14.
Peete also highlights the importance of celebrating responsibly and avoiding regrettable decisions.
Director Peete is anticipating the entirety of RCPD to be available over the weekend. In years past, the police department has employed the help of several outside agencies, but Peete says financially that didn’t make sense this year. Despite this, he says RCPD plans to set a tone Saturday to ensure things are controlled and don’t get out of hand.
No street closures will be in place, allowing vehicle traffic to traverse Aggieville. However, due to the high volume of foot traffic, officials are strongly discouraging driving in the area.
The public information officer will provide social media briefings at approximately 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday via Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).
