On Tuesday, Manhattan city commissioners will vote to terminate plans to develop the Handi-Corner site on Laramie Street between 11th and 12th streets.
Developer Midtown Land Company had planned to build a hotel and parking garage on the site, where a portion of the Handi-Corner strip mall has been demolished. However, owner TJ Vilkanskas, who also owns Back 9 Development, last week came before the city commissioners to ask that they let him build the hotel/parking garage across the street to the west, where he had planned to build a multi-use building with mostly office space called Midtown.
The commission last week agreed to let Back 9 change the plan and build a Hampton Inn with parking garage. Plans call for a 105-room hotel and 100-stall parking garage on the site, formerly a parking lot south of Kite’s Bar and Grill and currently an empty lot. Commissioners also authorized issuing $20 million in industrial revenue bonds for the project as well as project deadlines and potential penalties.
