Manhattan High senior offensive tackle Colton Wagner was selected to play for the West squad in the Kansas Shrine Bowl this July. Wagner was a first team all-league pick this season by the league’s coaches and helped lead the Indians to a share of their sixth straight league title in 2014. Wamego football coach Dale Burkholder is stepping down after a four year run that included the school’s first playoff appearance since 2007. “Telling some of my kids yesterday was the toughest thing I’ve ever done,” Burkholder said. “I love those kids.” The 65-year-old Burkholder, who has a wife that recently retired, cited spending more time with his grandchildren as the primary reason for his departure. Manhattan High’s Kelli Stockton signed her letter of intent to play soccer at Allen County Community College on Wednesday at MHS. Stockton helped lead Manhattan to within a game of their second straight trip to the 6A state tournament in 2014. The 2015 season will get underway on March 26th. Allen County finished their season this fall with a 13-4 record.

K-State’s Katie Brand and Kylee Zumach were both named honorable mention All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association after helping lead the Wildcats back to the NCAA tournament this year. They are just the seventh and eighth Wildcats to ever be named AVCA All-Americans, and Zumach is the first freshman to garner the honor. Zumach is also a finalist for the AVCA Freshman of the Year award. Brand is just the second K-State setter in school history to earn All-American honors, joining Gabby Guerre who was an honorable mention selection in 2003. Riley County police arrested K-State defensive tackle Terrell Clinkscales early Sunday morning for failure to appear and witness/victim intimidation. He was arrested at 4:01 a.m. Sunday morning at 614 Highland Ridge Drive, and his bond was set at $129. Clinkscales has played in seven games this year for K-State and recorded two tackles.

The Manhattan High girls are 2-0 after rolling to a 72-22 win at Topeka West on Friday. The Indians came out sharp and built a 22-4 lead after the first quarter that saw them shoot over 60 percent from the floor. Pesky defense helped force 17 first half turnovers, and the lead was 43-7 at the half. For the game Manhattan forced 25 turnovers and shot 54 percent from the floor to get the win. Caroline Ballard led the way with 19 points, while Kennedy Wilson and Savannah Roberts both cracked double figures as well with ten points a piece.…

Kelsey and Kylie McCarthy signed their letters of intent to play golf at Ft. Hays State Wednesday at Manhattan High School. Both sisters chose the Tigers over Baker and insisted they didn’t go into the recruiting process intending on playing at the same school. The sisters have been varsity golfers at MHS since they were Freshmen, and the duo finished tied for 10th at the state tournament this season. Manhattan High’s Kristen Fraley signed her letter of intent to play women’s tennis at Emporia State on Wednesday at MHS. Fraley was a state qualifier this season and finished 11th in 6A. She helped lead the Indians to a seventh place finish as a team. Fraley went to state each of the past three seasons, including an eight place finish as a doubles pair with Cathy Lei in 2013. In her final season as head coach, Manhattan High girls tennis coach Joyce Allen was named the 2014 6A girls tennis coach of the year. Allen had two state qualifiers this season in Cathy Lei and Kristen Fraley. Lei finished 8th at state, and Fraley finished 11th in leading the Indians to a 7th place finish as a team. Fraley will sign with Emporia State on Wednesday. Lei and Fraley combined for seven state appearances in their careers. Coming off of a Louisville Slugger All-American season, Manhattan High senior pitcher Jesse Steinbring signed his letter of intent to play for Central Missouri State today at MHS. Steinbring shined as a starter on the mound for the Tribe last season, compiling a 9-1 record to go along with a 0.79 ERA in 53 innings of work. The Indians finished in third place at the 6A state tournament last season. CMSU won the MIAA outright last season with a 35-16 overall record.
