Manhattan High cross country standout Michael Melgares signed his letter of intent with Kansas this morning at MHS. Melgares will join his brother Chris who signed with the Jayhawks last season. Kansas finished 5th as a team at the Big 12 championships earlier this month. Melgares finished as the 6A state runner-up to teammate Jackson Schroeder this year and helped lead the Indians to a third place finish as a team. He also medaled at state in 2013 as a part of the Indians state championship team.

Manhattan High wrestler Kendrick Rivera signed his letter of intent to wrestle for Baker University on Thursday morning at MHS. Baker is one of 50 NAIA schools nationwide with a wrestling program. Rivera chose Baker over athletic and academic scholarship offers from Hastings College (Nebraska), Lyons College (Arkansas) and Simpson College (Iowa). Last season, he was a state qualifier at 29-15 during his first varsity season with the Indians. He helped lead Manhattan to a 6th place finish at state. The high school wrestling season starts on Monday, November 17th for Rivera and Manhattan High.

K-State just missed the top 25 in the preseason coaches poll, checking in as the third highest team in the receiving votes category. The Wildcats got 37 votes and are one of six Big 12 teams to make an appearance. Kansas (#5) and Texas (#10) are both in the top ten, and Iowa State (#14) isn’t far behind. Oklahoma (#19) also made the top 25, and Baylor received two votes. The Wildcats were picked fourth in the Big 12 by the league’s coaches. The season starts on November 9th with an exhibition game against Washburn.

The K-State men came in just two points ahead of Iowa State for fourth place in the Big 12 preseason coaches’ poll. It’s the highest the Wildcats have been picked since they were the preseason pick to win the league before the 2010-11 season. The team was also picked fourth in 2007-08 and 2009-10. Kansas was picked to win the league for a third straight year, but Texas and Oklahoma also received first place votes. K-State men’s basketball picked up it’s second commitment for the 2015 recruiting class on Wednesday night when Florida combo guard Barry Brown made his choice known on twitter. Hays High School quarterback Alex Delton signed a financial aid agreement with K-State today. Delton is a three-star prospect according to Rivals.com who committed to the Wildcats in February.
