Riley County commissioners approved a bid recommendation for standby power equipment for the Public Works department Monday morning. Commissioners awarded the contract for the project to Economy Electric, Inc., of Manhattan in the amount of $59,160. “We felt very good about that because it’s a local firm, also,” commission chairman Ron Wells said. The contractor has indicated he will begin construction early in January with a completion date estimated for March. A Fort Riley man facing 2nd-degree murder charges will be seeking new counsel. Tierre Wall, 26, was in the Riley County District Courthouse Monday morning for what was originally a motions hearing, but he and his attorney, Brenda Jordan, met in Judge David Stutzman’s chambers before proceedings. After nearly a half hour, all parties returned to the court room and Stutzman granted Jordan’s request to withdraw from the case. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A person has been found dead in a car in east Topeka after a woman reported finding a bloody phone near her back door. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the body of a white male was found around 4:25 a.m. Sunday. The body was inside a vehicle that was stopped in the middle of the street. Officers responded to the scene following a report of “unknown trouble.” Police say the incident is being investigated as a homicide. No arrests have been made in the incident.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) A Kansas prosecutor says a handgun that killed the 3-year-old son of a sheriff’s deputy did not belong to the child’s father. Reno County District Attorney Keith Schroeder says the gun that killed Kaden Nagel on Friday belonged to “a friend” of someone at the apartment where deputy Andrew Nagel was living temporarily. The Wichita Eagle reports Kaden died early Friday morning after finding a loaded .40-caliber Glock in a South Hutchinson apartment and accidentally shooting himself with it.
