AMES, Iowa (AP)– Monte Morris hit a floater with 37 seconds left and No. 9 Iowa State held off Kansas State 77-71 on Tuesday night, moving into a tie for first place in the Big 12. Jameel McKay had 15 points off the bench for the Cyclones (14-3, 4-1), who joined No. 11 Kansas atop the league. Iowa State beat Kansas in Ames 86-81 on Saturday. USD 323 Rock Creek school district may have to look for new leadership in the near future. Darrel Stufflebeam has been named as a finalist for the USD 437 superintendent position.  According to USD 437’s website finalist interviews were conducted on the 12th of January, and the final hiring will occur on the 2nd of February. Stufflebeam is one of the five finalist vying for the Auburn-Washburn superintendent position. Stufflebeam says he has not made a final decision on the move to the larger district, but will consider it if he is chosen for the position.

One of the few individuals charged in the aggravated kidnapping incident, that took place in the 1300 block of Flint Hills Place back in October, appeared in Riley County District Court Tuesday afternoon. At 2:30 p.m., Kaywaun Washington appeared for his hearing in Chief Judge Meryl Wilson’s courtroom.  Washington’s attorney, Britain Stites stated that Washington was willing to waive his right to a speedy trial.  Judge Wilson accepted the waiver and set the case for a jury trial on April 8th-10th. Stites also requested a motion’s hearing court date prior to the trial, which was set for March 25th at 9 a.m.…

A Manhattan man facing two charges, aggravated arson and criminal damage to property, appeared in Riley County District Court on Tuesday.  These charges stem from an incident that took place in November, where his bond was set at $50,000 at that time. Ivan Beaulieu was scheduled for a preliminary hearing, but Prosecuting State Attorney, Kendra Lewison stated they have been preparing a plea negotiation and Beaulieu intends to waive his right to a prelim. Judge, William Malcolm did accept his waiver to his preliminary hearing and set Beaulieu’s case for arraignment on February 2nd at 10:30 a.m.

It was a day of transition at Tuesday’s Riley County Law board meeting, with Board members sworn in by Riley County Clerk Rich Vargo. New on the board are Manhattan City Commissioners Karen McCulloh and Usha Reddi and Citizen at Large Craig Beardsley. New officers were elected,with a motion presented by law board member and Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson for Robert Boyd to serve as Chair and Karen McCulloh as Vice-Chair.
