A special improvement district will be created, after the Riley County Commission unanimously approved the resolution during their meeting Thursday.  The City of Manhattan will actually be creating the district near Grand Mere, but two of the properties were just outside of the city limits, which meant the county had to take action on the item as well. The purpose of the district is to construct a public street in that area. Additional details were released Thursday afternoon regarding the incident where Fort Riley soldier, Alexander McConnell was arrested for first degree murder and child abuse. An affidavit from the Riley County Courthouse, indicated the incident took place on Saturday, February 8th at 3 p.m. in a Manhattan apartment.  The document indicates McConnel’s wife stated she left McConnell alone with her child for a “matter of minutes”, and re-entered the apartment to discover McConnel in a frantic state.  He told the woman the child was not breathing. EMS responded to the scene, and transported the child to Mercy Regional Health Center.  The…

On Saturday, October 11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Manhattan Public Library will celebrate Star Wars Reads Day with an Empire-sized party for all ages. Star Wars Reads Day was started in 2012 by Lucasfilm and its publishing partners as a way to highlight the vast number of books written about Star Wars, its characters, and its universe. At the age of 22,  Fort Riley soldier Eddie Lowery was taken into custody–and eventually wrongfully convicted of a rape and burglary he did not commit. That happened in 1981 and today Lowery, who spent 10 years in prison and 11 years after that proving his innocence, now makes presentations for The Innocence Project. Lowery was in Manhattan Wednesday evening at the invitation of the Manhattan Alliance for Peace and Justice, and shared some startling statistics. 318 men have been exonerated through the project. 18 of those men have been exonerated off of death row. The K-State men came in just two points ahead of Iowa State for fourth place in the Big 12 preseason coaches’ poll. It’s the highest the Wildcats have been picked since they were the preseason pick to win the league before the 2010-11 season. The team was also picked fourth in 2007-08 and 2009-10. Kansas was picked to win the league for a third straight year, but Texas and Oklahoma also received first place votes. The K-State Police Department has issued a news release, regarding recent robbery crimes near the K-State Manhattan campus, referring to the Riley County Police Department’s investigation of two robberies in two days in the 1200 block of Kearney Street and one in the 700 block of Bertrand Street. The K-State Police Department also has received calls a 48 hour time period for suspicious activity that may or may not be related to these robberies. In those instances, students reported subjects made contact or attempted to make contact while the students were walking. In all incidents, the students were by themselves.
