KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) A Kansas City, Kan., man suspected of robbing a bank and trying to flee on a city bus now faces a federal charge. The U.S. Attorney’s office filed a criminal complaint within hours of Thursday’s holdup charging Jamarr Dale, 29, with robbing Security Bank in Kansas City, Kan. Investigators allege Dale entered the bank around 9:15 a.m. and passed a note saying, “I need $3,000 or I will start shooting.” The teller gave the robber a drawerful of cash and the man ran out. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Relatives of a man who died while serving a life sentence for killing a northeast Kansas woman are seeking $1 million in damages and threatening to file a lawsuit. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the family of Roger Hollister sent demand letters last month to the Kansas Department of Corrections, the Nemaha County Attorney’s Office, the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and a former prison health care contractor. The letters allege that infirmary staff at the El Dorado Correctional Facility failed to adequately treat Hollister before the 61-year-old died March 20. He was convicted…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Pepsi-Cola of Topeka is lobbying the Kansas State Board of Education to drop a widely followed recommendation that schools not sell low-calorie sodas. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Pepsi of Topeka general manager Patrick O’Donnell says the company has voluntarily changed the products it sells in school vending machines to offer healthier options, even though it meant losing sales. Federal regulations taking effect in July will force the company to sell smaller bottles of some beverages, such as juices and sports drinks, which is expected to cut revenues further. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The University of Kansas has hired a legislative liaison from the state Department of Transportation as the school’s new advocate at the Statehouse. The university announced the appointment of Lindsey Douglas as director of state relations this week. The Lawrence Journal-World reported Douglas will play a major role in changing the university’s strategy for dealing with state policymakers and try to persuade the GOP-dominated Legislature to restore budget cuts made last year. In 2014 the Manhattan city commission is looking to strengthen regional partners, and provide a better road map for developers. During the retreat on Thursday at the Discovery Center the commission, city staff, and other community leaders met to discuss the upcoming year.  High on the list of priorities was the city comprehensive plan.  Previous building developments failed the final litmus test to go forward, and commissioners hope to rectify some of the developmental hurdles for growth within the city.
