TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Arts Commission is facing an Oct. 31 deadline to submit new partnership documents to the National Endowment for the Arts in effort to secure federal funding. The Lawrence Journal-World reports Monday that the commission is trying to satisfy NEA concerns about how the new state system functions. Kansas abolished the commission as a state agency beginning July 1. In its place Gov. Sam Brownback created the Kansas Arts Foundation to raise private funds to support statewide programs. But that hasn’t stopped about 50 University of Kansas students from starting an official sports club that plays Quidditch, the game made famous in the Harry Potter series. 6lawrence.com reports that the club was started by students Cassie Slocum and Doug Whiston. Riley County commissioners discussed leasing proposals for a total of 32 acres at 1435 Collins Lane during their meeting on Thursday. The land is currently home to the UFM community gardens program, but is owned by the county. Dennis Peterson, a member of the county property management committee, says there has been talk about an extension at the location. “The request is for ten acres for now and designates the west part,” Peterson says. “We would rather see the use of the northeast quadrant, saving some of that going west.” The county commission voted to allow UFM to expand its…
