A local bar owner expressed concern to Riley County Law Board members Monday regarding the Riley County Police Department, citing several instances of intimidation he says have occurred in the last week, since he spoke at a special law board meeting as part of a group calling itself “Citizens Assuring Tranparency.”   Rusty Wilson talked about noon bar checks, a warning on a rarely enforced no-smoking ordinance,and alleged picture taking of him by an off-duty policeman since that special meeting. Back in February, Riley County Health Department Child Care Licensing Surveyor, Breva Spencer introduced the idea of a fee increase for child care providers.  During Monday’s meeting, the item was revisited, as Spencer returned with additional information. The board had asked that Spencer compare Riley County’s fees to other similar counties, such as Reno, Saline and Leavenworth.  She reported Leavenworth is significantly higher,while Saline is comparable to Riley.  As far as Reno County, their fees are low, but they indicated they would like to look into a fee increase as well. A couple of requests were slated for Monday’s Pottawatomie County Commission meeting. The first request was for a re-plat, which the commission approved unanimously. The second request was for a second entrance by a Pottawatomie County resident. After some discussion, the commission denied the request, but approved to have the existing entrance widened. The commission also heard from Bob Cole, Director of the Pottawatomie County Economic Development Corporation. Cole talked about the search for his replacement and how they have gone from a pool of 17 to 10. They are hoping to have it narrowed down to three or four…

Manhattan Firefighters continue to investigate a fire at Pawnee Mental Health Services in the 2000 block of Claflin, which has been determined to have been intentionally set.   At approximately 6:35 a.m. Saturday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to Pawnee Mental Health and Upon arrival, crews found a grass fire next to a commercial building that was quickly extinguished.   Firefighters made entry into the structure and found smoke within the building, and realized fire was inside the wall of the structure. Crews opened up the exterior wall to complete their efforts. The fire was controlled in less than…

Please report only injury or serious vehicle collisions until winter weather clears up. K-State’s Nate Griep threw a complete game, three-hit shutout, and a four run third inning led the Cats to a 5-0 win over Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon in Norman. K-State salvaged the three-game weekend series after the Sooners took the first two games on Friday and Saturday. Griep improved to 2-0 on the season.  Jake Elliott took the loss for OU and falls to 2-3. K-State is now 14-9 overall and 1-2 in the Big 12, while the Sooners are now 18-7 and 2-1. LOUIS (AP)   Dwight Powell had 15 points and seven rebounds and No. 10 seed Stanford wrapped up its second straight upset at the free throw line, knocking off No. 2 Kansas 60-57 in the South Regional on Sunday.
