An Earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck near Wellington, Kansas at about 3:40 p.m. Wednesday and was felt in the Manhattan area. Riley County Emergency Management Director Pat Collins tells KMAN he spoke with personnel at Tuttle Creek Dam who said the quake was not strong enough to set off any alarms there. Phone calls and tweets came into KMAN saying they felt the quake for five to 10 seconds and the quake was felt by some at the KMAN studios and offices. Over a year after Governor, Sam Brownback issued his call to action to develop a vision for the state of Kansas’s water supply, the second draft has been completed. Brownback spoke about the 80 page draft during Wednesday’s conference on the future of the water in Kansas, at the Hilton Garden Inn. Brownback summarized the entire process, and spoke about the future. He commented, “we are going to fight tooth and toenail against federal control over our water. Coming off of a Louisville Slugger All-American season, Manhattan High senior pitcher Jesse Steinbring signed his letter of intent to play for Central Missouri State today at MHS. Steinbring shined as a starter on the mound for the Tribe last season, compiling a 9-1 record to go along with a 0.79 ERA in 53 innings of work. The Indians finished in third place at the 6A state tournament last season. CMSU won the MIAA outright last season with a 35-16 overall record.
Jeff Mittie added two guards and one of the tallest centers in program history with three new signees to start the fall signing period on Wednesday. Manhattan High cross country standout Michael Melgares signed his letter of intent with Kansas this morning at MHS. Melgares will join his brother Chris who signed with the Jayhawks last season. Kansas finished 5th as a team at the Big 12 championships earlier this month. Melgares finished as the 6A state runner-up to teammate Jackson Schroeder this year and helped lead the Indians to a third place finish as a team. He also medaled at state in 2013 as a part of the Indians state championship team.
