Laramie Street at 17th Street will be closed temporarily beginning Friday (July 11) for construction of a left-turn lane and road widening at the intersection. Several University Park benefit district residents attended the public hearing, held during Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting.  The hearing was regarding the sewer rehabilitation project for the district. A petition for the project was circulated the last couple months, and after there were not enough signatures-it appeared the project would not move forward.  Soon after, an emergency order was issued for University Park, citing the area for unlawful discharge of waste water. This citation prompted the county commission to take action, and resulted in the idea for a hearing. A few residents took the podium to bring their concerns forward.…

Update: The Riley County Police Department located Arayah Gauna, 16, of Manhattan at approximately 4:30 p.m. The teen was announced as missing earlier in the afternoon after being away from her home for over 24 hours. Police located Gauna in the 1500 block of Humbolt Street in Manhattan and confirmed that she was unharmed and was not in danger. She was transported to the Riley County Police Department shortly after being located and was then reunited with family. The juvenile was removed from the missing person/juvenile runaway database late this afternoon. The reason for her disappearance has not been released,…

At least two Pottawatomie County residence have fallen victim to yet another phone scam.  These scams occur when a grandparent receives a call from someone identifying themselves as being with the American Embassy in Mexico, and that their grandchild is in trouble.  The suspects in this matter have the name of the grandchild, and in one instance the victim could hear what sounded like their grandchild in the background.  The suspect tells the victim that their grandchild is being held, and that money is needed to be wired for their release.  The grandparents are told not to contact anyone, that…

It’s unusual for Junction City Firefighters to have four fires in two days–but that’s been the case this week, with the Kansas Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross providing assistance to eight people impacted by those fires.   Junction City Fire Chief Kevin Royse indicates all available firefighters have been at work on the blazes, which began early Tuesday morning. Fortunately no injuries were reported.   Damage ranged from $150,000 to $1,000. The Fourth Annual RCPD vs. MFD BBQ Competition will take place this Saturday during the Relay for Life event held in the Manhattan City Park. Each year the two emergency services agencies pit members against each other in pursuit of perfectly smoked and barbequed pulled pork, chicken, and ribs. RCPD has taken home the trophy for the past three years and hopes to make it a fourth this year. K-State picked up it’s seventh commitment for the 2015 football recruiting class yesterday in the form of Carl Junction, Missouri linebacker Chase Johnston. Johnston tweeted his pledge yesterday night: Johnston doesn’t have a star rating yet on rivals.com, but is listed at 6-4 and 220 pounds with a 4.57 40-yard dash time. He is the first known commitment for K-State since Bishop Carrol’s Denzel Goolsby tweeted his commitment two weeks ago.
