The woman that was charged in the first degree murder case, where John Burroughs (68) of Manhattan was found dead in his residence in September of last year, was sentenced in Riley County District Court Monday afternoon. Christina Love (49) appeared in court to receive her sentence.  She faces charges including obstruction and interfering with a law enforcement officer. Love first made a final statement, by saying that Burroughs was her friend for 13 years.  She added, “Had I known anything was going to happen, I wouldn’t have went in the first place”. During his previous court case, he waived his right to a preliminary hearing, and Monday his jury trial was set in Riley County District Court. Garret Olson (22) was charged with involuntary manslaughter after an accident in October of last year, where Trevor Redding (17) died. Olson made a plea of not guilty to the involuntary manslaughter charge, as well as two additional charges including failure to remain at the scene of an accident. After getting results from a blood test, it was also found that there was alcohol in Olson’s system, that was over the legal limit. Olson’s jury trial is set to last…

Should Riley County Police charge for working special events such as parades and races? That was the question considered by Riley County Law Board members Monday, with RCPD Assistant Director John Doehling telling the group that the 19 events this last year, amounting to 47 hours and 126 officers, added up to a lot of overtime, to the tune of $390,000.   Some of the event organizers spoke up, saying everything they raise goes to the community, and a 500 dollar bill or higher amount means a lot. Riley County Police responded to a complaint of robbery after a man demanded money from a motel employee. Around 11 o’clock Friday evening, police responded to the 2100 block of Fort Riley Boulevard, where the Westwood Motel is located.  The complaint involved an unknown suspect who entered the business’s main office and wanted money. This unknown black male is said to be around 6′ 3” and weighs approximately 210 pounds.  He fled the scene after taking an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency. “I’ve been here since 1994, and this is the lowest it’s ever been”.  This was a statement made by Riley County Health Department Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Coordinator, during Monday’s county commission meeting. Ross was commenting on the case load numbers.  The case load requirements are established by the state, and are sent out in the WIC contracts every fiscal year.  The state requires that each program meet the case load numbers by at least 98%.
