A couple of area court cases will be argued before the Kansas Supreme Court next week. A former Fort Riley soldier charged with the shooting death of a Kansas National Guard member January first of 2012 is appealing to the high court, with an appearance December ninth. Daniel Parker was sentenced in October of 2013 in the first degree murder of 21 year old Frederick Beverly. Parker was given a life sentence by Riley County District Court Judge David Stutzman. The Wamego City Commission approved a rezoning ordinance at their Tuesday meeting. City Manager Merl Page presented the ordinance at the recommendation of the Planning Commission to rezone a tract of land at 226 Lincoln Avenue from R-H (Historic Townsite Residential District) to C-1 (retail business district). This is a residential property located at the corner of Valley and K-99 Highway. The new owner, Elaine Dhuvetter plans to turn the property into a crafting Retreat. According to Page, the Planning Commission held the public hearing to consider the application, and with no objection, recommended approval of the rezoning application.…

Manhattan High’s Kristen Fraley signed her letter of intent to play women’s tennis at Emporia State on Wednesday at MHS. Fraley was a state qualifier this season and finished 11th in 6A. She helped lead the Indians to a seventh place finish as a team. Fraley went to state each of the past three seasons, including an eight place finish as a doubles pair with Cathy Lei in 2013. Manhattan Mayor Wynn Butler discussed his recommendations for appointment to the Law Board Tuesday. “Based on all of the discussion that I heard this year about changing the makeup on it (law Board), I’m convinced that we should put at least one qualified citizen on the board,” Butler said. As KMAN has previously reported, a Manhattan man was charged with attempted murder last month after a woman was reportedly stabbed. That man appeared in Riley County District Court, via web cam, Tuesday afternoon. Samuel Dartez (30) appeared, alongside his attorney, Larry McRell, for another status hearing. McRell asked that the case be set for either another status hearing, or set for a preliminary hearing sometime in late January.
