The Manhattan Military Relations Committee joined the Junction City Military Affairs Council and the AUSA Wednesday for a first-ever combined luncheon as part of Fort Riley’s Victory Week celebrations. A large group of area officials met together all day Wednesday to discuss health during the Public Health System Assessment.  The event was held at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church on 2900 Kimball Avenue in Manhattan. Prior to this assessment, materials were sent out to the attendees to view, in order to increase the understanding and familiarity with the items that would be featured that day. The Riley County assessment used a nationally standardized tool to help the community answer around 200 questions about public health. More than 1,000 Westar Energy customers in Pottawatomie County were without power for less than an hour Wednesday afternoon. Westar Spokesman Shane Batchelder tells KMAN a line out of Jeffrey Energy Center was apparently causing the problems, with a few substations affected. The Louisville, Belvue, and St. Mary’s areas were impacted. He did not have details about what was wrong with that line. Batchelder says the power went out at about 2:20 p.m and restored before 3 p.m.

The city of Wamego is holding its 143rd Annual Independence Day Parade this year, and the Wamego Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for parade entries. Businesses and organizations are encouraged to build floats for the Fourth of July float contest, which are awarded in three categories: Best Portrayal or Display Related to the Theme, Greatest Display of Patriotism, and Most Unique or Clever Use of Materials. Participants in this year’s Biking Across Kansas effort pased through Manhattan Wednesday, on their way to an overnight stay in Wamego. More than 1,000 riders are expected, and they’ll be staying at Wamego High School Wednesday night. The group has been travelling since this past weekend, with some starting at the Colorado border Friday. Overnight stops have been in Satanta, Spearville, Ellinwood, and Salina. The group continues Thursday to Oskaloosa, and then to Hiawatha for an overnight stay Friday, finishing its 555 mile trek in Highland.
